Gentrification and its relationship with tourism: a perspective of the city of Veracruz, Mexico

Abstract

Gentrification is currently a topic addressed by many professionals from different disciplines, such as geographers, architects, urban planners, economists, anthropologists, sociologists, etc., it is a topic that has gained presence in recent decades in the field of tourism. For this reason, this article exposes the importance of gentrification and its relationship in the tourism field, highlighting the main factors that influence for and against it, considering the case of the city of Veracruz and history center. The type of research is descriptive-explanatory, the qualitative method was used, the interview technique supported by a question guide (instrument). The review of secondary sources from different disciplines was very important, which were selected and analyzed to build a theoretical and referential framework of the topic. Among the results found, three factors stand out that make gentrification possible: geographical, economic and cultural. Factors that are proposed to be reviewed and addressed to consider gentrification and new tourism in the city of Veracruz-Puerto, which contribute to the arrival of investments to rescue and improve local infrastructure, and benefit the economy of the place.
