Introduction: knowledge of the behavior of cows in silvopastoral systems can provide useful information to correct zootechnical practices in order to reduce negative factors such as heat stress. Objective: determine the effect of the shade of a low tree density silvopastoral system on the behavior and physiological indicators in lactating cows with the Holstein X Zebu genotype. Method: 15 cows were used that grazed in paddocks with trees (between 12 and 14 trees/ha) and living fences and paddocks without trees. The behavior was recorded and the data were processed according to a completely randomized design, with a 2x2x2 factorial arrangement (grazing with and without association of trees, two sessions of the day: morning and afternoon and two seasons: rainy and not very rainy). Results: the behavior of the cows in the grazing system with or without trees was affected by the effects of the presence of shade, session of the day and season. Sun and shade grazing activities were influenced by the interaction Presence of shade X Season and Presence of shade X session of the day. Rumination in the sun and in the shade was affected by the shade, season and session of the day. The cows spent more time ruminating in the shade in the afternoon and resting in the sun in the morning. Conclusion: grazing with trees favored activities in the shade. The silvopastoral system produced favorable changes in the behavioral patterns and physiological indicators of the cows, compared to the monoculture grazing of natural pastures.
