Abstract

Introduction: Veterinary telemedicine has been a topic of interest in the medical community and the technological and social communities due to its impact in diverse environments that lack access to new advances and processes in this sector. Objective: To review the current status of veterinary telemedicine in the scientific literature and its technological development. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in academic databases, and articles were selected based on points of relevance from a comparative analysis in the context of the use of telemedicine focused on pets, using the documentary review technique under exclusion criteria such as the relevance of the consulted documents and the relationship of the objective with the information analyzed. Results: Platforms have evolved from simple telephone consultations to integrated systems prioritizing emergencies and allowing more efficient access to specialists. However, telemedicine in veterinary medicine faces limitations, such as the difficulty of performing complete physical examinations and procedures in direct contact, which can compromise diagnostic accuracy. Conclusion: The study emphasizes the current status of telemedicine systems for pets and the small animal veterinary sector. The findings suggest and indicate the need for further progress on this topic, especially in emergencies and their classification, as an underexplored topic in veterinary medicine.
