Impacts on the hydro-sanitary facilities due to the hardness of the water at the Tryp Cayo Coco Hotel

Abstract

Introduction: Water hardness is mainly controlled by geological factors. Mineral sources of hardness come from the subsoil and, depending on the composition of the subsoil, the water will be more or less hard. Hard water has a high calcium and magnesium content and is associated with sedimentary rock catchment basins, of which the most common are limestone and chalk. The Tryp Cayo Coco Hotel has large incrustations of magnesia in its water system and networks. This occurs because the water extracted from the wells contains a large amount of calcium, reaching up to 400 parts per million, classifying it as very hard water. Objective: In this work a preventive maintenance actions and measures to mitigate these effects are proposed, with the aim of improving the services of the facilities and favoring the useful life of the equipment required in these facilities. Method: In this research, a technical analysis is carried out on the infrastructure of the hydro-sanitary facilities by applying the cause-effect diagram. Results: The field survey allows identifying the weakness, determining the possible causes and the main problems regarding maintenance. Conclusion: It is confirmed that the non-existence of a water treatment plant leads to major obstructions. The growing problems and overexploitation for decades demand adjustments in the maintenance planning at the hotel and the investment proposal to counteract the adverse effects on the operation of the hydro-sanitary facilities.
