The tourism sector: Veracruz-Boca del Río, Veracruz, Mexico and the sustainable development goals

Abstract

Introduction: The tourism industry is characterized as one of the most dynamic sectors of the global economy. Its constant growth keeps it among the leading markets generating wealth and employment worldwide, impacting the transformation, development, and modernization of municipalities, communities, cities, and regions. Emphasis must be placed on the importance of environmental stewardship and protecting local populations through actions suggested by international organizations such as the United Nations (UN), through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Objective: To identify the training conditions and needs of the tourism sector in the Veracruz-Boca del Río metropolitan area regarding knowledge and practices related to the SDGs. Method: This descriptive, exploratory study uses both quantitative and qualitative methods. The techniques employed were surveys and a questionnaire to gather information on sustainability practices in businesses. Results: An explanation is made of the 24 surveys applied to entrepreneurs in the tourism sector of the conurbation of Veracruz-Boca del Río, Ver., the most outstanding data and a training proposal. Conclusion: The objective of this project was achieved by identifying the training conditions and needs of the tourism sector in the Veracruz-Boca del Río metropolitan area regarding knowledge and practices related to the SDGs.
