Abstract

Introduction: Early diagnosis of Ehrlichia canis in dogs is essential for the management of canine ehrlichiosis, a serious disease affecting canines in tropical and subtropical regions such as Nicaragua. Although seroprevalence studies have been conducted using serological methods such as ELISA, there is little research on the effectiveness of the Buffy coat method. Objective: To diagnose the presence of Ehrlichia canis using the Buffy coat method in dogs treated at the ZERVET veterinary clinic, San Marcos, Nicaragua. Objective: Diagnosis of Ehrlichia canis infection using the Buffy coat method in dogs attended at the ZERVET Veterinary Clinic, San Marcos, Nicaragua. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted, analyzing blood samples by microscopic observation. Criteria for sample selection were established, and staining techniques were used to visualize the microorganisms. An analysis of different updated research related to this topic was performed. Results: The prevalence of Ehrlichia canis reached 52.5 %, and its complete analysis revealed the sensitivity and specificity of the Buffy Coat method compared to other diagnostic techniques. It was shown that mixed-breed dogs are more predisposed to ehrlichiosis infection; adult dogs are more susceptible to this infection than month-old puppies; there is no selectivity on the part of the microorganism with respect to sex; urban and rural dogs are equally vulnerable to ehrlichiosis, because the transmitting tick adapts to different environments.
