Abstract

Introduction: The implementation of the strategic approach in higher education is an essential requirement to face the challenges these institutions undergo internationally. Hence, there is a strong interest in making scientific contributions that serve as a guide for its effective execution in the academic field. Objective: Analyze the research trends on the application of the strategic management approach in higher education. Method: Using bibliometric techniques, an analysis of 351 studies published in the journals indexed in the Scopus database from 1990 to 2023 was carried out. Results: Publications in the area increased and individual authorship was remarkable. The United Kingdom, Spain and the United States led the research in this field, with the most frequently discussed topics being performance evaluation with a strategic approach, the social-economic effect of this approach, and recently, the use of technology and business simulation. Conclusion: The results demonstrated the current vitality of this topic, the need to develop author and countries’ collaborative networks and the impact that the studies have had internationally.
